White Dwarf Presents: Chaos Dwarfs

White Dwarf Presents: Chaos Dwarfs was a compilation of articles printed in Games Workshop's White Dwarf magazine detailing the army list for Chaos Dwarfs for use in the 4th (and also 5th) editions of Warhammer.

Amongst the information contained in it was the only significant compilation of Chaos Dwarf background, the rules for their war machines, a battle report involving High Elves, the first rules for the blunderbuss, Chaos Dwarf magic cards (later reproduced in the Warhammer: Magic suplement) and a full army list. The book also contained additional rules for special characters that were not originally featured in White Dwarf, including Zhatan the Black, Gorduz Backstabber, and Astragoth.

It was a full colour supplement and was the basis for the Chaos Dwarf army list until the Ravening Hordes army list was published in 2000. Ravening Hordes was for the most part based on White Dwarf Presents: Chaos Dwarfs. In 2011 Tamurkhan: The Throne of Chaos was releashed with a new armylist for Chaos Dwarfs.

[edit] Criticism

Since it was technically not a true Army Book, White Dwarf Presents: Chaos Dwarfs has garnered a certain amount of criticism from the Chaos Dwarf player's community as a contributory factor to the race's premature death. However, it is worth remembering that the Chaos Dwarf rules first appeared in White Dwarf and were the first Warhammer race to be thus presented, so writing a completely new Army Book was unnecessary. Nonetheless, the information in the book is not as complete or coherent as that found in other Army Books (both contemporary and current) and there is a fair amount of repetition of background and even occasional contradictions. Since the articles are reprinted verbatim from White Dwarf, there are also some editorial references that are somewhat inappropriate for a single body of work - such as noting that there is "no room in this issue" for blunderbuss rules.
